Simple Ways to Create a Black & White Retro Kitchen
A great theme for a kitchen is black-and-white retro. Even though this retro style goes way back, through the years it’s become a classic. If you’ve decided that a retro décor is right for your kitchen, then here are some great tips to help you begin.
Use Red as an Accent Color in the Kitchen
Use red as an accent color along with the black and white to make your retro kitchen look more authentic. You can still keep that retro feeling with these touches of red but at the same time bring some interest and color to the room. Have you ever seen a black-and-white diner or kitchen from years ago? They almost always incorporate red into the design. You can decide how much red you end up using in the kitchen. You can add smaller touches, such as with items like placemats and window treatments, or larger accents as with a backsplash or the color of a wall.
Flooring Options for a Retro Kitchen
If you’re designing a retro kitchen, one of your best flooring options is a black-and-white tiled floor. You can create any number of alternating patterns of black and white tiles that will enhance the retro look, giving the room the feel of an old diner. If you need to go a cheaper route, you also have the option of laminate flooring that has a black-and-white checkered pattern. You might want to skip wood flooring in your black-and-white kitchen design, but if you’re really set on that, then at least try to find a darker wood. Then you always have the option of adding at least one black, white, or red area rug on top of the wood floor to complement the retro look.
Cabinets for a Retro Kitchen
It’s also a good idea to stay away from wood cabinets, just like the flooring. Instead, paint the cabinets white. You might even consider painting them black, depending on your wall color and how daring you feel. Then you can accent the cabinets with retro pull handles in silver. A great way to get really creative is to make your own one-of-a-kind cabinet pulls, hand painting them with a checkered or geometric design.
Choosing Appliances for a Retro Kitchen
Refrigerators back in the day were white, and thus most kitchens had white appliances. These days there are so many different options for appliances that you can play around with the different choices. For instance, stainless steel appliances would fit the style of a retro kitchen well. You might also consider going with black appliances, but that would depend, of course, on how much black you’ve used in the rest of the room. Remember, you don’t need to strictly stick to retro options. You can always give your black-and-white retro kitchen a modern twist.
If you’re looking to give your kitchen a unique style, a black-and-white retro theme can be a great way to decorate your kitchen. When you plan your design, remember to consider comfort as well as style, as your family will most likely be spending a lot of time there.
